Gold Rush Fever: A Story of the Klondike 1898 by Barbara Greenwood, Scholastic Inc, New York, USA 2002

“To relieve the monotony of winter life and prevent cabin fever, stampeders played endless games of a type of solitaire called Klondike, Here’s how to play it…”

In her book Gold Rush Fever: A Story of the Klondike 1898, Barbara Greenwood explained the Seven Card Klondike game and stated that this type of Solitaire was endlessly played by the sourdoughs in Klondike. She gives a very clear explanation of the game, including beautiful illustrations. She doesn’t mention anything about the gambling part. I contacted Mrs. Greenwood myself to ask her what her resources were. She answered:

“My reference for the game is Giant Book of Puzzles and Games by Sheila Anne Barry (publisher Sterling Publishing Co. New York). She doesn’t include any background telling how the games in the book developed”
